What biting on the flats in Key West

Report Date: February 2, 2010

This winter has been a cold one for sure. I spent from December 30 to January 16th tied to the dock. Cold water temps, never getting over 57' for nearly a week.
But like all winter cold front they move on and the weather turn back towards the typical 78' with bright sunshine.
This week the fishing has been very good.
Lots of hungry barracudas to target, and plenty of permit and sharks mixed in.
Fly casting this time of year can be interesting, due to the variety of fish found swimming the flats. It tough to have multiple fly rods set up and in the ready position to cast. However, typical set up is one 9 wt. for permit, and a 10wt. set for barracuda and sharks.
The spinning tackle set up seems to be a bit easier. Largely in part to the ease or lack of time needed to prepare for a cast at one of the above fish.
Even on the cloudy windy days, we can still have a productive day casting or blind cast the flats for barracuda. Or adventuring to the back side or the back country in search of large schools of jack crevaile and blue fish.
In the winter down here in the keys you never know what to expect you are going to catch. Could be a permit and a shark, or lots of husky jacks.
Catch fish and have fun.......thats my goal or service that I wish to provide for you.
