Big Fish Swimming The Flats In Key West, Florida

Report Date: February 19, 2014

It's almost spring time down here in Key West, Fl. If you don't believe me, head out onto the flats for a day of fishing. The big fish are swimming the flats around Key West. Count the number of permit you see that might weigh over 15 pounds. Okay, maybe that is not realistic as an angler. But as a guide, I'm always counting fish, species and size of the fish. There comes a point when the numbers and size of fish increase. I associate that with spring time. Unfortunately for the rest of the USA, you have a few more months.

The past couple weeks the fishing has been good in Key West. We had a nice push of tarpon come in from the deep water. Making for some great morning and evening fishing.
The barracuda are found from the backcountry flats to the Marquesas. I even spooked a few bonefish the other day. If chasing the elusive permit is your thing. Then get out of the cold and get down here to fish. From the end of February and through out the whole month of March, the permit should be digging. Swimming around, an eating shrimp and crabs. Getting all fat and happy up on the flats, in preparation to head offshore in April to spawn.

Get in on the great fishing down here in Key West, Fl.

P.S.
They don't sell ice to salt the sidewalk or snow shovels at the hardware store down here.
