Fishing on the flats in Key West
Report Date: July 28, 2017
Fishing on the flats of Key West has been super for July.
The amount of guides fishing this time of years decreases considerable. Many guides are seasonal or part timers which means; they either go back to their real job or go back and guide up in the mountains. This is a very welcome time for us local, year round guides.
Take your pick of what species you want to fish for on the flats these days. All of the big 3 species can be found these days. If tarpon are not your thing, then go and chase bonefish. How about those permit? Let's go and chase them on the flats. The past week has been quite good for tarpon fishing.
The tides are right and the local tarpon seem to be swimming the ocean side flats in decent numbers for late July. They're pretty happy to chew a well place fly or artificial bait placed in the right location. If skinny water sight fishing is your thing, then you are happy with the amount of bonefish and permit that have been around.
Granted the permit have not been on every flat and you might have some waiting time to get your shots.
In general I've been happy about the flats fishing during the month of July in the lower Florida Keys. The water heats up mid afternoon, so plan on an early start time. The interesting thing about fishing when it's hot outside, is you don't really notice the heat when you're throwing at a tarpon, permit or a school of bonefish.
