Fishing in Key West
Report Date: January 10, 2009
Flats fishing in Key West, from the holidays through mid January has been fun.
Plenty of action for the hardcore angler or just family out for a fun day on the water.
In fact I had my father out fishing just yesterday and he hooked a nice permit on a live crab.
The weather for the most part since Christmas day has been good. So I have been fishing for lots of barracuda and sharks on the flat.
There has been a fair amount of permit around and a few bonefish and tarpon.
The barracuda fishing is great using tube lure or specialty flies.
These toothy guys are a blast on the flat. High speed runs and great jumps, and amazing strikes at your lure. I love winter time barracuda fishing on the flats.
The permit have been scattered around, some days high on the flat in skinny water, or other days in deeper cuts, and or channels. There has been no real pattern to the permit fishing these past few weeks.
Find em' and then catch em'........ That's my only advice.
The bonefishing and the tarpon have been around. Though sparse in numbers, however, this is not un common due to the time of year. If you get a shot at these fish or catch one of these dudes your doing good that day.
The basin fishing or back country fishing has been real strong as well. These fish are: Jack crevaile, lady fish, snapper, and bluefish.
Check out my website and give me a call if you want to go fish!
