Old man winter has sure had his way with Key West this February. As a resident of the Keys for thirteen years, I can say for certain, I had my heater on in my house more this year than ever. The fishing has been tough, or impossible at times. As I canceled four days in a row last week. However, in wonderful key west fashion, we have warmed up and the fishing has turned on.
The barracuda fishing has been amazing. Plenty of targets for the fly caster or the spin caster. Looking for some great sight fishing with lots of action, and a hell of a fight, these barracuda are your species.
The permit have been around as well, although not as many as I would like, however, there are enough to give an opportunity to catch one. As a rule the full moon can affect the fishing, so understand that when booking trips around the big moon. Its a tidal thing. The tides can run harder or longer than usual, producing more and or less water on the flat than you might like for ideal fishing. Or perchance the fish do more feeding at night under the light of the moon. Just a few thought on the full moon to keep in mind.
Tarpon in key west during January and February? You betcha, I jumped three just a day before our last big cold front. Don't expect tarpon as a rule in the winter months, however, if the weather is right, and you show some interest, I bet your guide just might be able to put you on a silver king.
The bonefish are a possible target species in February as well. But, like the tarpon, conditions have to be just right. If you are not apposed to chumming with a few shrimp you chances will be even great to get a shot at the grey ghost.
Bluefish, jacks, pompano, ladyfish, and trout.....The fun fish. These guys are around and offer some fantastic rod bending action. Fly or spin, If you have never caught a jack, you will be surprised at how hard these fish pull for there size. It not all about the name of the fish you catch, but how much fun you can have while catching fish.
