Fishing Key West
Report Date: July 3, 2005
Key West Tarpon fishing is still producing great action even this far into the summer. Although most of the migratory Tarpon have pushed through the lower keys on there way toward the panhandle and or the upper east coast we still have lots and lots of stragglers and a great many local fish to give you a fantastic morning Tarpon fishing.
One of my customers last week managed to hook up on about eight Tarpon although we only got two of these monsters to the boat; we had plenty of great action. Just about every day this past week we hooked at least one or more Tarpon and a few Permit. Not a bad week for my anglers and myself.
The tides have a great deal to do with the fishing this time of year. Or for that matter all year long tide plays and important factor; however, when the water is warm tide is everything. The moon phase is another keys in all of this type fishing. I like to fish the big moon, early and or late in the day. The full moon produces more gravitational pull on the earth, therefore creating large tides and larger tide duration. A much larger rise and fall than our usual one or two feet change. Keep in mind all of this is very much the particulars about the game of flats fishing and should not warrant too much concern when planning you trip. The full moon tides can be tough, however, I have also seen some great thing happen on those particular tides. The moon phase and the tidal chart is just one more piece of the puzzle that all guides must pay attention to when fishing. You think people get strange during a full moon???.What do you think happens to fish?
I look toward some great Bonefishing again this month as we have some very favorable Bonefish tides. The big schools of Permit have been flooding the flat, coming in from the Gulf of Mexico. An as I stated in the beginning the Tarpon fishing has been great.
