Fishing in Key West still great despite hurricane threats.
Report Date: August 30, 2008
Fishing down in Key West, has been real good for the month of August and thus far for September. It seems that the tropical storms and or hurricanes have actually helped to keep the water temperatures on the cooler side. Which in turn has kept the fishing on the flats real good.
Customers of mine have had great success throwing flies at bonefish. I have seen and caught quite a few large bones, up to the ten pound mark, as these fish are the deluxe model bonefish. Key West, average bonefish is around 4 to 6 pounds. These deluxe size fish I normally don’t find around the flats until late September. Never the less we love to see these big bones.
Permit fishing as usual has been strong. Large fish still lurking around off the flats in the deeper pools and channels and a large number of smaller fish found almost daily on the flats.
Tarpon fishing, early morning or evening still proving to be the best time for success. There are still some of these larger gulf-side fishing found, laid up, and cruising the edges in the backcountry. I was out two nights ago and jumped two tarpon on fly.
Keep in mind to check the weather forecast when your planning your trip to Key West as the Atlantic Ocean has been daisy chaining with tropical storm activity. Even now as I sit and write this report hurricane Ike is just south of me traversing across Cuba.
