Fishing in the wind all month long.

Report Date: March 31, 2007

March was a tough month for guiding down here in the lower Keys. There where lots of Permit around, however, the wind speed averaged around 20 to 25 knots. This made things very interesting for my fly fisherman. Yet through all the wind we still managed to catch fish. The Permit where up to there usual trick, looking at and pursuing the fly and yet when it came down to eating ,well, lets just say some fish eat flies and some fish don’t. The second March Merkin tournament was held over three days, the first day was blowing 25mph, with gust up to and over 30mph. Not great conditions, however another great time fishing this tournament. My live crab Permit anglers might have caught more Permit in March due to the ability to cast in all the winds conditions. The Barracuda fishing stayed strong through the month with many large fish being taken on fly and tube lures. There where also a few Cobia scattered amongst the sting rays way up high on the grassy flats in the Gulf of Mexico. There where plenty of fish around for March, however, the wind as I stated before made it difficult to fish. March is one month where the weather pattern can change from day to day, you just never know what to expect.
