Flats Fishing Key West
Report Date: January 3, 2017
I'm happy to report that we are having a good winter of fishing so far down in Key West. Much or most credit being given to the fact that the weather has been good.
I had a good morning of permit fishing yesterday. We never sealed the deal, however, we had 5 good shots on fly in a couple hours. Throwing a live crab would have certainly increased our chances of success by 110%. Fishing for permit on the flats can be very frustrating at times. You are targeting the most weary fish to be found in the shallow flats. Mediocrity in casting will rarely be rewarded by a permit. That being said, when it does happen and you get the permit to commit and get a bite, it's a magical moment.
Tarpon are still being seen on occasion in some of the deeper channels. Early morning and calm conditions will provide your best chances at going toe to toe with the silver king.
Barracuda are quite happy to play the game these days.
Find the barracuda laying up in the shallow flats & waiting to ambush a baitfish. Fly tackle or spin tackle you can have a great time targeting these fish. They're quite exciting to watch as they chase down a fly or a tube lure. The barracuda on the flats are often ready and willing to play the game of fishing.
Come fish the flats off Key West.
