Key West fishing the flats
Report Date: January 22, 2011
Fishing in Key West has been better than average the last couple of weeks. Winter cold fronts have not plagued us for a few weeks. The end result of nice weather is super fishing. A few minor cold snaps, however, the water temp. have been around 68 to 74 degree.
The back country fishing in the creeks and channels has been off the charts. Lots of schools of jack crevaile, bluefish and shark....add a few cobia and some tarpon and you have a mixed bag of anything goes fishing. Fishing the back country off Key West, you just never know what you might catch.
Key West flats fishing the past few weeks has been lots of fun too. Greats sight casting at those fast striking hard pulling barracuda. On the warm days its not uncommon to see a dozen permit or more.... and on many days, I have found schools of fifty or more laying just off the edge of the flat. Fishing for these guys can be fun when they are in large schools. You might catch just one or you may catch three. In most cases these permit are happy to eat a live crab.
The shark fishing or the numbers of sharks on the flats have also been good. If shark is what you want to fish for. Then your in luck cuz we have them all over the flats in Key West.
If you are thinking about tarpon fishing this spring or summer with me. You had better book soon.
