Key West Flats Fishing In March...

The fishing this time of year can be all at the mercy of the weatherman. If he is being nice to use we?re in good shape if he?s having a bad week we sit at the dock. So for me, a crazy Tarpon guide bad weather means spending countless hours tying up Tarpon and Permit fly?s. Coming up with new patterns or just simply reproducing my tried and true favorite.

Anyhow, March has been a little rocky so far. The weather man sends us three good days and then a couple of mediocre days. The good new is that there is lots of Permit around when its nice and some of our bigger Tarpon that live in the Key West harbor and out back in the Gulf of Mexico are staring to show themselves a bit more often. Which means lots of fun early in the morning when the water in the real shallows might still be a little cool. Don?t forget about those monster Cudas. Lance a customer of mine had one blast his tube lure a few days ago and when we finally got it boat side I figure the fish went at least thirty pound on the scale. Nice fish Lance, a little different then those native?s up there in Northern California.

Today?s weather looks good so and old customer of mine and my self will head out into the great unknown and try and get one of those wild Permit to eat one of my hand tied bugs.
