Key West flats fishing around Valentines Day.
Report Date: February 15, 2012
Im happy to report that the weather has been fantastic this winter. We have only had a couple of strong cold front and at there best have only kept me off the flats skiff for a few days. The fishing is right on track for the month of February. Fishing in the backcountry on the warm days has been producing to great pre season tarpon fishing. These tarpon have been quite large in fact, nearing the 80lb mark.
Up on the flats the fishing has been even better. Large schools of permit and jacks wandering around the flats which is giving the fly or spinning angler a good challenge. Be prepared when targeting these guys. The shots at these fish can happen fast, so sitting and waiting is not going to yield good results.
Want some toothy critter action? We have that going on in epic proportions. Barracuda and shark swarming the flats in search of food. Still to this day, barracuda fishing on the flats is one of my most adorned species to fish.
Get down to key west and enjoy some of the greatest fishing in the world.
