October fishing Key West

Report Date: October 28, 2006

What can I say about the month of October? Some days are good some days are bad. You see down here in the Keys, you have a transition time in the flats fishing. Whereas up north you have some pretty leaves changing colors and then the leave fall and the tree lie dormant for the winter. Well down here the leaves don’t change colors; however the water temp changes and new species of fish move into the shallows and other species go to deep water. The end result is a mix bag. On nice sunny warm days you may find some Bonefish lurking around or on the chilly fall days you may see lots of Sharks and Jacks and Ladyfish. As a guide its often time to pull out all the tricks and you may have to travel far and wide to get the job done. It really boils down to the weather, and how hot or how cool the air temp is. This October we had some great Permit fishing days and still some Tarpon, and around the 3rd week of Oct we had pretty good barracuda fishing. The bonus of this time of year is that the sun has started to rotate angles and the days are not so hot, from a guide’s perspective this is. By now we are all ready for a bit cooler weather down here in Key West. I’m looking forward to some good Barracuda and Permit fishing in the next few months. Let the big Tarpon tackle and the Bonefish tackle take a rest.
