Post hurricane Irma
Report Date: October 15, 2017
Life has been interesting down here in the Keys during the last few months. The Florida Keys took a big hit from hurricane Irma in September. Unfortunately, this is a risk that comes with living in a coastal area or worse yet an island chain surrounded by Ocean on both side.
We’re a strong, resilient community in the keys and will rebuild and move forward stronger than before the storm.
I would like to mention a big thanks to all customer who reached out to myself before & after the storm.
A big thanks to the hard work of first responders , City electric, Florida Keys Aqueduct & waste management.
Working countless hours to get the Keys back up and running as quickly and safely as possible.
So with all that being said, how about the fishing?
The flats have been quite active with fish in the weeks following the hurricane. We’ve definitely had some issue with dirty water at times, however, that happens when it blows 25mph not to mention 130mph.
Lots of baitfish around which have made the juvenile tarpon quite active. I’ve been having much success targeting these fish, with flies or artificial baits.
The barracuda and scattered around as well due to the large number of baitfish on the flats.
The permit and bonefish are up to their usually trickery. Foraging for food on the flats and taking precautions to not get fooled to easily by anglers. I think the fishing is quite good right now!
All good things to report down here from Key West and the Lower Florida Keys.
