spring break fishing in Key West
Report Date: March 23, 2009
So the winter weather gave us a spring break down in Key West.
Yes, the winds went east to south east and the mercury rose to almost 78 degrees.
Like clock work, the water temperatures rose, and the tarpon came pouring into the Key West harbor and the usual back country tarpon fishing spots, hungry and ready for action. Over a week a fantastic tarpon fishing this far in March. Closer to two week, however, 7 days of this where amazing.
This is why there is no better place in the world to fish than Key West, and from my perspective, to be a professional guide.
Permit, if that’s your target, we got them. Loads of these permit fish around to target on fly pole or to try your luck with a live crab. These permit, are working on feeding and warming up there eggs in the warm shallow before they make there journey off shore to the wrecks and or reefs to spawn in the month of April. Don’t worry if you planning on fishing in April, there will still be plenty of fish around to catch. The spawning migration is not like a bus, which departs at 0900 on a Friday morning heading for the reef.
Bonefish, barracuda, sharks……The gang is all here.
There are not loads of bonefish around, however, you will see and have a chance to catch one if you’re lucky.
The barracuda and shark are still covering the flats in full force. This will offer some great action to the fly caster, or the spin caster. Great sight fishing and these guys pull hard on the drag……..
Hope you get a chance to fish the lower keys and Key West this spring.
