Summer time flats fishing in Key West
Report Date: June 29, 2009
As spring turns into summer in Key West the fishing seems to get better. Now mind you there may not be the huge schools of large tarpon passing on the ocean side flats. However, there is still a mess of fish around to be target by fly casters and spin tackle enthusiasts. Tarpon, permit, and bonefish are plentiful in late June and July in Key West, fl.
Seems to me on many occasions in late June, I had numerous customers catch a grand slam. On the flats in the Keys, this would be a tarpon, permit and bonefish. The water is plenty warm and the wind on most days is light and variable. Spectacular sight fishing can be had with out having to deal with the wind.
The evening or night time tarpon fishing has still been super. The palolo worm hatch went off in June helping pave the way to some great fly casting opportunities for customer. These little tiny red worms hatch on the ocean side flats in the lower keys in May and June. It seems to be a tide thing more than a moon thing. The tarpon love these little tiny ¾” to 2” inch little red worms. This is great fun to watch hundreds of tarpon swimming around slurping this little worm of the surface like candy.
I would imagine straight on through the summer the fishing should only get better.
Summer fishing on the flats off Key West, Florida can be amazing.
